This new TV show about the Vikings got me thinking about something else again. To a large extent the Vikings may have an unfair image problem if most of what you’ve heard about them was written by monks along the coast of the British Isles, the truth is there was a lot more to that culture than what you would hear from that particular point of view. But setting aside that issue, let’s just look …at the raiding and looting that they did and compare it to the way our international economic and political system works. If multinational corporations and the politicians they’ve bought ravage the economies of underdeveloped nations, and if that woks out well for the shareholders while people starve as a result, how much more civilized are we? John Perkins has written an interesting book about this, “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” and more historical info can be found in “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa” by Walter Rodney.
